AI Governance Consulting: What It Covers, What It Costs, and How to Choose

AI governance consulting is paid help to design, run, or audit how your organization oversees AI. RSM publishes timelines from one to two weeks for a policy review to 14 to 16 weeks to implement a program. Helium42 puts a twelve-month program at £130,000 to £250,000, and Scytale puts consultant-led ISO/IEC 42001 support at $20,000 to $80,000. Much of the groundwork is free, and this page shows which Institute document covers each piece before you pay.

Read this before comparing proposals

Consulting and certification are separate bills, and software is a third.

Several pages that rank for this search are also product pages. IBM’s consulting page says its guardrails are underpinned by watsonx.governance, and Tyson Martin’s firm comparison separates governance platforms from consulting firms. A certificate comes only from an accredited certification body, at its own fee. Check which of the three a quote covers.

The work has names. Ask for them on the proposal.

RSM is the only firm in the live top results that publishes a timeline for every service, so its names and weeks anchor this table. BRG groups the same work into four core engagements and Scand into five deliverables. The last column names the Institute document that covers the groundwork for each one.

The fees that are actually published.

Of the pages in the live top results, only Helium42 publishes fee ranges, in pounds. Two compliance software vendors publish dollar ranges for ISO/IEC 42001 work. Wizr says cost varies and Tyson Martin sells a fixed-fee sprint without a public price. Treat every line below as that source’s figure on November 3, 2026.

Six answers that shrink the scope

The questions every consultant asks first, and the free document for each.

An assessment is 10 to 15 percent of a typical twelve-month budget in Helium42’s breakdown, and it starts by finding out what you already have. Each item below records a decision in a form a consultant, an auditor, or your own committee can read.

  1. 01

Which AI systems do you run, and which tier is each one?

Scand lists risk identification and classification as a core consulting deliverable, and RSM’s program implementation includes system inventory procedures. An inventory with a tier per system is the first thing a consultant will ask for.

AI risk assessment: tiers, scoring, and a decision gate
  2. 02

What may staff do with AI tools, and what may they not?

RSM quotes two to four weeks to develop a policy. A full acceptable use policy text already exists here, with a policy gate simulator that shows how each rule applies.

  3. 03

Who can approve or stop an AI use case?

BRG’s framework and policy design engagement starts with governance structures such as executive committees or steering groups. A charter names the committee, its members, and its decision rights.

  4. 04

Which laws and standards actually apply to you?

RSM’s own framework lists sources from the NIST AI Risk Management Framework to ISO/IEC 42001 and the EU AI Act. Five questions on the Institute’s framework page name the layers that carry duties for your case.

  5. 05

Which controls will you claim, and what evidence proves each one?

An implementation engagement ends with controls an auditor can test. The Institute lists all 38 ISO/IEC 42001 Annex A controls with the evidence for each, so you can write a first Statement of Applicability yourself.

  6. 06

Are you launch-ready, control by control?

RSM’s policy review takes one to two weeks and benchmarks the scope and depth of what you have. A 32-point checklist with a progress bar lets you find the gaps before the clock starts.

Eight questions, each with the page that prompted it

Vet the firm with its competitors’ own words.

The firms that rank for this search describe each other’s weaknesses with unusual candor. The questions below come from those pages, with the source linked so you can read the claim in context.

  1. 01

Is the advice tied to a product you would have to buy?

IBM Consulting’s page says its guardrails are underpinned by watsonx.governance. Tyson Martin’s firm comparison warns that organizations not running IBM infrastructure should check whether the recommendations stay vendor-neutral. BRG describes its approach as independent and technology-agnostic, and Centric says it guides technology choices problem-first. Ask the question either way.

  2. 02

Which framework will the deliverables map to?

NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework is voluntary and organizes work into four functions. ISO/IEC 42001 is the certifiable management system standard. The EU AI Act carries legal duties with dates. A consultant who cannot say which clauses each deliverable satisfies is selling a document, not a control.

  3. 03

What happens after leadership signs the framework?

Scand names four ways policy-only engagements fall short: governance becomes static documentation, nothing enforces it after sign-off, teams execute it differently, and it decays without engineering support. Ask what is built into pipelines and who maintains it.

  4. 04

Who exactly will do the work, and what have they enforced before?

BRG lists former in-house compliance officers, a former federal prosecutor, and certified AI governance professionals on its AI Governance & Risk page. Ask any firm for the names and backgrounds of the people on your engagement, not the partner who sold it.

  5. 05

Which tier of firm are you paying for?

Helium42 sorts the market into Big 4 and major firms, specialist boutiques, micro-boutiques, and fractional governance leaders, with day rates from £500 to £2,600. A fixed-fee sprint and a 14-week program are different purchases.

    Helium42, market landscape
  6. 06

Is the scope and timeline written down before you sign?

RSM publishes a timeline for each service, from one to two weeks for a policy review to 14 to 16 weeks for program implementation. Tyson Martin sells a fixed-fee 30-day starter sprint. Use published scopes like these as the yardstick for any quote.

  7. 07

What evidence of outcomes can they show?

Wizr’s own buying guide says to ask for evidence of savings and risk reductions, not just frameworks. Ask for a redacted deliverable from a past engagement and for what changed in the client’s systems afterward.

  8. 08

Will your team be able to run it without them?

Helium42 reports higher post-engagement adoption for implementation support than for assessment-only work and describes consultants marketing a graduation-focused model. Ask who owns each control on the day the engagement ends.

Dated triggers, not fear

Four reasons organizations hire help, with the dates attached.

Consulting is easiest to justify when a law, a customer, or your own incident count forces a deadline. Each trigger links to the primary source.

You place AI systems on the EU market

  • The remainder of the EU AI Act started to apply on August 2, 2026. Chapter III duties for Annex III high-risk systems start December 2, 2027. Providers of general-purpose AI models placed on the market before August 2, 2025 must comply by August 2, 2027.

Your AI influences consequential decisions in Colorado

  • SB26-189 requires developers of covered automated decision-making technology, from January 1, 2027, to give deployers technical documentation on intended uses, training data categories, known limitations, and human review. Both sides keep compliance records for at least three years.
  • Source: Colorado SB26-189

Adoption has outrun oversight

  • Stanford’s 2026 AI Index reports organizational adoption at 88% and documented AI incidents at 362, up from 233 in 2024. Scand cites the same adoption figure as the first reason enterprises hire governance consultants.
  • Source: Stanford HAI, 2026 AI Index

A customer or auditor will ask for proof

  • ISO/IEC 42001 is the world’s first AI management system standard, written for organizations of any size that develop, provide, or use AI. Certification is a separate purchase from consulting, with its own published fees.
  • Source: ISO/IEC 42001:2023

Not a trigger: a vendor’s deadline. Wizr and others sell 90-day programs, which can be useful, but the dates that matter are the ones in the law and in your contracts.

If you bought RSM’s services end to end

About 36 weeks from first review to a running program.

  1. Weeks 1 to 2

Policy review. The firm benchmarks the scope, depth, and quality of the policies you already have and lists the gaps.

    RSM: one to two weeks
  2. Weeks 3 to 8

Governance-focused risk assessment across use case intake, model lifecycle, at-scale, product, and data governance.

    RSM: four to six weeks
  3. Weeks 9 to 20

Strategy and risk roadmap. Existing enterprise risk management is adjusted to cover AI, with a roadmap for the program.

    RSM: eight to 12 weeks
  4. Weeks 21 to 36

Program implementation: use case evaluation, system impact assessments, system inventory, and stakeholder training.

    RSM: 14 to 16 weeks
  5. After go-live

Internal audit of the governance practices, co-sourced or outsourced, feeding the next cycle.

    RSM: eight to 12 weeks

Week counts add the top of each range RSM publishes for its policy review, risk assessment, strategy roadmap, and program implementation services (2 + 6 + 12 + 16 = 36). RSM presents them as separate services, so a real engagement may run some in parallel or skip steps. Helium42 describes a twelve-month program instead, and Wizr a 90-day managed service.

AI governance consulting FAQ

Answers to the questions people search for.

What is AI governance consulting?

Paid help to design, implement, or audit how an organization oversees its AI systems. Firms that sell it describe the same core work: governance structures and policies, risk and impact assessments, mapping to laws and standards such as the EU AI Act, the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, and ISO/IEC 42001, and controls with monitoring. BRG lists four core engagements, Scand lists five deliverables, and RSM publishes a timeline for each service it lists.

How much does an AI governance consultant cost?

Few firms publish prices. Helium42, a UK consultancy, publishes day rates from £500 to £2,600 depending on the tier of firm, £20,000 to £60,000 for a four-to-eight-week assessment, and £130,000 to £250,000 for a twelve-month mid-market program. For ISO/IEC 42001 work, Scytale puts consultant-led implementation support at $20,000 to $80,000. These are the sources’ figures, read on November 3, 2026, and not quotes from LA Global Institute, which does not sell consulting.

How long does an AI governance consulting engagement take?

RSM publishes one to two weeks for a policy review, two to four weeks for policy development, four to six weeks for a governance-focused risk assessment, eight to 12 weeks for a strategy roadmap or an internal audit, and 14 to 16 weeks for program implementation. Helium42 describes a twelve-month program across assessment, design, implementation, and advisory. Wizr sells a 90-day managed service.

Do I need a consultant, or software?

They answer different questions. Software tracks models, documents, and evidence. A consultant decides what the organization should govern, who owns each decision, and which laws apply. Tyson Martin’s comparison separates governance platforms from consulting firms for this reason. Several consulting pages are also sales pages for a platform, so ask whether the advice stays vendor-neutral.

Do I need a consultant to get ISO/IEC 42001 certified?

No. Only an accredited certification body can certify you, and that is a separate fee from consulting. Vanta notes that organizations with mature governance often run preparation internally. Scytale’s $20,000 to $80,000 figure is for optional implementation support. The Institute’s cost guide lists every published line of a certification cycle.

What is the difference between AI governance, AI ethics, AI compliance, and responsible AI consulting?

Scand’s comparison puts it this way: governance consulting answers who decides and how the decision is enforced; ethics consulting asks whether the system should be built this way at all; compliance consulting confirms legal requirements are met; responsible AI consulting applies the principles in practice. Governance sits above the other three as the structure that connects them.

What should the first engagement be?

Helium42 says most organizations start with an assessment and then decide whether to proceed. RSM’s shortest service is a one-to-two-week policy review. Before either, the Institute’s free documents let you inventory and tier your systems, adopt an acceptable use policy, charter a committee, and run a 32-point checklist, which shrinks the scope you pay for.

Does LA Global Institute provide AI governance consulting?

No. LA Global Institute does not sell consulting, certify organizations, or operate an audit or regulatory program. It publishes governance documents that organizations can use before, during, or instead of a paid engagement. Firms on this page are named because they rank for this search or publish figures; none is endorsed.

Figures and timelines were read on the publishers’ own pages on November 3, 2026 and change without notice. References do not imply affiliation with, or endorsement by, RSM, BRG, IBM, Centric Consulting, Scand, Tyson Martin, Helium42, Wizr, Scytale, Vanta, NIST, ISO, or any other organization.
